Microsoft All Over Again
Ok, everyone loved Microsoft until they felt like they couldn't do anything without Microsoft. It's happening all over again with Google. It's not quite there yet. Google Maps are quickly becoming an essential tool. Gmail, while just another web-based email, is becoming the email of choice. If you want to get people to your website, adwords is the most straight forward way to go...
But where are they going to really dig their heals in?
Google Office is being developed. Well, I can't be sure of the name but the idea is there. Without even realizing the control that you are relinquishing, you will start to use the server based software because of it's portability and probably it's compatibility with MS .doc .xls and .ppt
Sun MicroSystems tried something similar with the SunRay but the software, speed, and reliability were not there yet and then they confused us with Star Office... (a whole other story)
So Google's next step in domination is likely a thin client piece of hardware. There was the PC, I predict the GC (Google Computer)
All you will need is enough RAM to interact with Google servers, a Browser - which I'm surprised they haven't created yet - maybe Mozilla is good enough, and it is free.
They could pretty much give these machines away because they were likely cost a few hundred bucks but not have expansion or capability to modify them to be usefull for non-google related abilities. Or perhaps that's biting off more than they can chew...
Alternatively they might sell the machines, or stay out of the hardware business all together.
Watch for emmerging hardware companies that sell these thin clients.
It's been predicted for years and True Google Domination is likely to begin in the next 18 months.
If they continue their wifi, then watch out, these machines will be configured for this already.
Now, thinking about all of this may cause some to say "That's really cool, I can't wait" but think about - AT WHAT EXPENSE
If you don't value your privacy, time to start celebrating.
